CROSS COUNTRY FINISHES 7TH IN NCAA REGIONALS

McNeese’s Gideon Cheplak led the Cowboys at Friday’s 2021 NCAA South Central Region Cross Country Meet, garnering All-Region honors with a 23rd place individual finish as both the Cowboys and Cowgirls stayed true to their regional rankings with the Cowboys placing seventh and the Cowgirls 13th in their respective meets.

Both teams entered their races ranked in the regional top 15 poll the exact places they finished. The men ran a 10k while the women a 6k.

The Cowboys were the top finishing Southland Conference team, collecting 242 points and trailing sixth place Texas A&M by just five points. Texas won the race with 35 points followed by Arkansas with 39, Arkansas State 166, Lamar 200 and Rice 201 to round out the top five.

COWBOYS AT HBU 2PM ESPN+

HBU takes on McNeese for Homecoming, as well as Military & First Responders Appreciation Day, in Southland Conference football Saturday at 2:05 p.m. at Husky Stadium. Listen to the Husky Sports Network audio broadcast with Garrett Jones and Tyler Boyd or watch on ESPN+ with Randy McIlvoy, Shea Walker and Laura Sadler.

McNeese will attempt to beat HBU with several backup players today. So much was made last week of Nicholls beating the Pokes with a backup RB and their throwing QB who came into the game in the second half. Starting running back Stephon Huderson will not play today, so HBU will get to face a backup running back. The Pokes are also expected to be without both starting defensive tackles and their middle linebacker and one corner.

MCNEESE VS HBU CONNECTION

Former McNeese LB commitment from Washington-Marion Christian Guillory(#26) is a backup LB for HBU.

Former Sulphur HS wide out Branden Walker is a backup WR at HBU. His brother played at McNeese.

Cedric Cormier is the OC at Houston Baptist. Cormier was a star high school player at North Shore and played at the University of Colorado. His son Deon is a reserve WR for McNeese.

The first All-American at HBU was Garrett Dolan of Barbers Hill. Garrett was killed shortly after his senior year, and they have honored him with retiring #40. Garrett’s brother Jared was a linebacker at McNeese.

TEXAS A&M, ALABAMA, AND GEORGIA RACKING UP THE RECRUITS

Last Saturday the Aggies not only beat Auburn, but they beat just about everybody in the nation for the top DL in the nation in Walt Nolan of Powell, Tennessee. They beat Nick Saban, Ohio State, and Michigan for his services. The Aggies are #3 in the nation behind UGA and Bama with one month to go.

The rich continue to get richer in the SEC. On Friday afternoon, Georgia, the No. 1 team in the nation, landed a commitment from four-star cornerback Julian Humphrey who picked the Bulldogs over LSU and Texas A&M.

Humphrey, from Clear Lake High School in Houston, is rated the No. 94 overall prospect and the No. 12 cornerback in the Class of 2022. He originally committed to Florida but backed off that pledge in late October. Fans are livid with Dan Mullin’s trajectory.

Humphrey’s commitment vaulted the Bulldogs’ class past Alabama to No. 1 in the nation. Georgia now has nine top-100 prospects in its class, including two five-stars — linebacker Malaki Starks and defensive lineman Mykel Williams.

The pundits on Paul Finebaum continue to say Jimbo is headed to Baton Rouge. I don’t agree with that opinion and ask myself why? Just because your friend is the AD at LSU does not mean you give up your rural ranch, your deer lease, and the facilities that place has. The recruiting is off the charts.

  1. Watched a great high school game from the Michigan High School playoffs last night with something happening at the end that made me feel really bad for one team’s sophomore quarterback. It was 1 loss West Bloomfield at undefeated Adams in the State Division I quarterfinals. Bloomfield was the defending State champ. Kind of classic to me because Bloomfield had some Power 5 recruit level talent led by 4 star running back Dillon Tatum (Michigan State commit) while Adams was the stereotypical all-White team running a variation of the wing bone. Announcers called it veer and I guess it was but it looked like Georgia Southern’s old offense except the quarterback was usually in kind of a pistol depth position.

Anyway it was a great game and ended with Adams winning 14-13. One dramatic thing came late in the game when Bloomfield was trying to score late, had no timeouts, and had just gotten a play where the guy was tackled in bounds around midfield with less than 30 seconds left. The expectation was that the QB would take the snap and spike the ball to stop the clock. But, instead, the poor kid took the snap from center and took a knee. He quickly realized what he’d done and spiked it afterwards but it was too late. Most of the clock ran out as they got lined up again, snapped it, and spiked it. But by that time there were only two seconds left.

You could see from the body language how deflating it was for the kid. And the thing is that, with the receivers they had and that kid’s arm, they were not dead before he did that. Odds were pretty much against them, but not dead by any means because they had big, athletic receivers that showed repeatedly that they could be covered and still get the ball.

I looked up a 247 list of Michigan’s top 116 2022 prospects. 5 Bloomfield players, including #8 and #11, and one Adams player , #87, were on it. Starts wise, for whatever that is worth, Bloomfield had a 4 star, two 3 stars, and 3 2 stars while Adams had one two star.

The one Adams player with starts is a defensive end who has committed to Harvard. Funny how that is too because he was a really dominant player in the game. One would not have known, just being an unsophisticated fan watching the game, that he was not considered to be at the same recruit level as some of the Bloomfield players. They couldn’t block him at all. He “only” had 2 1/2 sacks but he was constantly in the backfield harassing people. If the Bloomfield quarterback wasn’t very athletic he’d have had ore sacks.

  2. Huge win last night for Carl Abseks Barbers Hill Eagles over undefeated and State ranked #3 Fort Bend Marshall. Absek came to BH after a fine run at Austins Cedar Park HS, replacing Tom Westerberg (formerly of Allen). BH got the season off to a rough start, it was a combination of the kids learning a new system and BH playing up in pre-district. They entered the playoffs as the 4th seed, at 5-5 and 4-3, and some critics were vocal. I tried to remind everyone it takes time, as Absek came to BH late in the summer and still has not had an offseason yet. I have no idea what transpires next week in round 2 but already Absek has THE highest profile win in recent history.
