JULY 16 SUNDAY

McNeese head baseball coach Justin Hill is looking for a new pitching coach. Corey Barton will be leaving the Pokes for the same position at Louisiana Tech. I have been observing the musical chairs that have been going on between ULM, Louisiana Tech, and Southern Miss with their coaching positions.

It started when ULM went over to USM and hired their pitching coach. I wrote that I was concerned that Corey Barton would get that job. However, USM hired Louisiana Tech’s pitching coach Christian Ostrader. It did not cross my mind that Tech would then be searching for a pitching coach.  In fact, Tech lost two assistant coaches recently. ULM has hired two new assistant coaches including former MSU and SFA assistant Matt Collins. Of course, Matt is Mike Collin’s son who also works at ULM.

Corey has done a great job as lead recruiter for Justin Hill and will be tough to replace, but there are tons of coaches reaching to be in D1 baseball. Thanks and best of luck in your new gig, Corey (except when playing the Pokes).

A recent survey by the Baton Rouge Advocate revealed some interesting numbers for the football programs of the SEC. This is not athletic programs, but just football. The figures indicate that not all football programs are on equal footing. I do not have to remind McNeese fans that the Southland Conference mirrors the SEC in this fact as well. I am not complaining because I am not a Socialist and believe that if you make the money, you should be able to spend the money. Some programs choose to limit their spending, while others just have built-in advantages that not even the government can try to even out.

For example, Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State trail Texas A&M, LSU, Alabama, and Tennessee by between 40,000 to 60,000 in seating capacity. Multiple $60-$100 per ticket times the seats, and it is easy to see the revenue gap.

Vanderbilt is the smallest at 40,000 with Ole Miss(58,000), Mississippi State(60,000), and Kentucky (61,000) follow. Kentucky actually reduced 4000 seats so the fans could have more room and better eye sight. The top four programs all seat between 101,000 and 103,000.

As far as football revenue, it might surprise you that Tennessee is clearly the leader at $109 million, while Alabama($104 million), and Texas A&M ($100 million) try to make ends meet. Auburn(92.5), Georgia (87.6), and LSU (85.1) may not be Boardwalk in MONOPOLY, but they are certainly parked in Park Place. Kentucky(39.7), Mississippi State (35.5), and Missouri (34.6) bring up the low rent district. It is pretty telling that a state university like Missouri is receiving $.30 on the dollar that the Big Four are receiving. Missouri maybe taking a hit in university revenue due to the campus protest in 2015. Enrollment is way down after all the violence and threats by some students and outside trouble makers.

As far as expenses, no one spends as much money as Nick Saban. Alabama spent $56.1 million on football last year, while Auburn spent $42 million. Don’t ever accuse the state of Alabama for not knowing their priorities. LSU spent $29.8 million a year ago. Of course, student enrollment plays a part in student fees. Most SEC programs are in the bracket of 25,000 to 30,000 enrollment. Vanderbilt has only 6,700 students, while Texas A&M is at 62,000 and Florida at 53,000.

Southland Conference fans will be treated to a new beautiful stadium at Abilene Christian this fall. The new stadium will be fan friendly with good sight lines and ten suites for the “fat-cats” to buy. The stadium will seat around 10,000, but will have seating in the end zone berm for up to 3,000 fans. I look forward to visiting this new campus stadium. I have been to every stadium in the Southland Conference with the exception of Houston Baptist. Shotwell Stadium will remain as the Abilene ISD football stadium.

For all of you conspiracy theorists, I have a good one for you. Safeway Corporation sponsored a Touchdown to Win Contest in Canada this season for the Canadian Football League. The prize was $1 million dollars if a team returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in the same game. Karen Kuldys of Canada was selected in a raffle to be the contestant in the game between Winnipeg and Toronto.

The opening kickoff was returned for a touchdown so Karen was one TD away from a million dollars. In the second quarter, a kickoff was returned 99 yards for an apparent touchdown. I have seen the film, and I can tell you that there was no penalty for clipping on this TD. An official threw his flag twenty yards behind the runner as he crossed the goal line because an offensive player put his hand on the shoulder of a defender at the 20 yard line. Both players were losing their balance at this point and both stumbled. It had no bearing on the touchdown. Were the officials notified by Safeway to make sure this money was not given away? It is a little fishy since we have had no winner.

To the credit of Safeway Foods, they have given Karen a year’s worth of groceries for her “bad luck.” Yeah, right!

  1. I not responding to anything today but yesterday.

I agree with everything you but its hard to go against history. If I told you had to put down 100 shares of Amazon stock (2005) on Clemson at the beginning of last season to win a billion dollars. Knowing no team named Tigers has ever won the national title it would be hard. Yet you wouldn’t have a problem doing if it was 100 shares of above avg stock. Now your more of a gambler but you have a city.

you also made comment about the fans. Fans here are back however we still have not seen it attendance wise or valley. Houston lost the Austin area 5 years ago when they lost RR. They still have CC because of the hooks. However The rest of the Valley is split where as 10 years ago it was Astros only. This town has baseball fever again. You go to Wal-Mart and people are talking you go to Mexican joints and its Astros not Soccer on the TV. I saw a stat that Houston is #13 in attendance and Rangers are #11. Two factors have played into this. The weekend series Rangers have two more weekend series over Astros. Also big part is location and location. I don’t see Houston beating the Texas in attendance unless Houston goes on a big tear and Rangers fall. The reason is that big thing about half mile walk called six flags. You get families during the week and weekends. Houston is not a tourist spot the park is smaller. I will say as someone who has been to only 13 games this season parking and getting on the freeway is a nightmare now. They built 3 loft complexes in former parking lots, They tore down the bridge to get on the toll road. This causes all the traffic to go one way in a downtown area. Before it was better than the Dome more exits to major roads. Damn construction but still the main factor is Rangers will always get travelers and Houston will only get OTC. Yes we play the Rangers which is a big draw so when we do have out of town people they are going to a game that is going to sell out already. Big name is here already in Correa. He is in his second full season and only Judge (NY) is getting more love. Correa is not Trout yet but give him time.

Speaking of Correa what do you think of signing him now to this deal 15 year 500 Million. If you do that it would be little more than Trout and you have him locked in for a career player. Also he gets bragging rights he becomes the first player to sign for half a billion dollars. The Astros was the first to do a Million dollar contract in all of sports.

I am willing to give up on fisher and many others. I am just not ready on K. Tucker. The problem with the Astro’s pitching is their top two pitchers in AAA and AA ball are here. That is why its hard to give up a Martes and Paulino in the same deal. That is the Randy Johnson deal all over. However we just have to much dead space in AAA. I understand what if you have injury. We have a Marwin who is a SS that can play every position except P and C. Tony Kemp is 2B/SS/OF at AAA. You have 3 former SS in your starting infield excluding Marwin. We like to compare this team to 98 Astros who traded for Randy Johnson. Astros had 5-6 guys batting .300+ 5 guys with 20+ HRs. Now this year team is hitting with more power and you have better relief. I don’t expect this team repeat these numbers next year. Springer and Gonzalez is having career years. I am one who is open for a SP and giving up 1 of the top 4 players and few of the others long as we have team control or that player is under contract. I do not want a Yu that we lose in 6 months. Granted the Astros might have signed Randy Johnson if we didn’t have 2 months of rain and a big flood back in 98. That was one of the things he hated about Seattle.

I am heading out to Amarillo, Abilene, Lubbock and Midland/Odessa to catch a few minor league games in a few hours.

  2. Now that is a true baseball fan. It should be fun and let me know of all the interesting promotions you may see. I think colleges can learn from minor league baseball. We had a Grease Night a few nights ago in Frisco with the actress that played Frenchie throwing out the first pitch and everyone wearing pink getting in for halfprice. She signed hundreds of autographs and took pictures. When we went to the Yankees AAA park in Wilkes-Barre- Stranton it was Christmas in July. Santa at every door reaching into a bag and giving you a surprise. They had Santa Helpers selling concessions and giving away things. Really cool. LOL As much as I like to tie up great players, I would not sign anyone, including Trout, Correa, or Judge past five years and $150 million. It is just too risky and can bring a whole organization down if they get hurt or miss. The Red Sox owe Panda $49 million and released him yesterday. We owed $80 million to Fielder, but insurance is paying half. The Angels should be competing with the Astros but they made three horrendous deals with guys for long term. They cannot make trades or sign free agents because they lost about $40 million on CJ Wilson which we refused to resign. Ditto on Josh Hamilton who they gave $150,000 million to, and of course, Albert is being paid for another three years and he has not performed up to $30 million a year. I wouldn’t pay for Correa. I am a wise gambler , not a foolish gambler. LOL
