WEDNESDAY

It was a bad night for former Cowboy pitcher Grant Anderson. Grant tied a Texas Ranger record by giving up four home runs in one inning. This is Shohei Ohtani blasting the first of four home runs. The record was previously held by Patrick Mahomes, Sr, dad of the KC quarterback.

2025 FOOTBALL RECRUITING

I generally do not recognize commitments that are for future years, but since Gary Goff got a great start to 2025, I will make an exception. Just remember, this is not for this year, but 2025. E.J Archield of Tampa, Florida committed on Tuesday to the Cowboys.

The 6’3 210 dual threat quarterback had a great junior year and looks forward to an even better senior year. Commitments are non-binding, so it is a long way to December when he can sign. Here is some film on him .

TRANSFER PORTAL KIND TO LSU BASEBALL

In the spring of 2023, Coach Johnson of LSU quietly assembled the greatest portal collection of talent that the NCAA has ever seen. Since baseball is not football in Louisiana, there was not much hoopla over his additions. Stuck in the middle of two great hitters that he added, was a transfer from the Air Force Academy. Paul Skenes was his name. Not only did he pitch LSU to a national championship, but he was also drafted #1 last June in the MLB Draft.

Skenes’ sixth career MLB start, which saw him fan eight Cardinals and get a standing ovation from the St. Louis crowd after throwing another six scoreless innings is setting Major League baseball on it’s ears. The pundits are saying he is the best rookie pitcher in the past twenty years to enter the league. The Pittsburg Pirates are the lucky ones. He is consistently hitting 100 mph in his starts.

  1. Skenes also has a very popular girlfriend in LSU gymnastics team champion Olivia “Livvy” Dunne. She also has done very well with her NIL efforts. She like Caitlin Clark have brought extra eyeballs to her sport.Speaking of Clark where do you come down on her not making the Olympic team.Stephen A. Smith believes like Christian Laettner she would be good for the Olympic team from a needed marketing standpoint. But,others point out removing a more worthy player for her would not be right. They do say her inclusion or not does not change the position of the women’s olympic team as a big favorite to win gold.Best to you and yours and continued prayers. On a fun personal note my wife makes a killer lemon pie and banana pecan cake.Does your wife or you have a signature dish you prepare.Mine is Bananas Foster flamed tableside.

    • It would be good for TV ratings and interest in women’s basketball. I am not upset that she didnot make it because there is so much animosity in the league towards her. I don’t get why the black players(not all) resent the publicity. I saw an article last year locally where the Rangers have given more than $10 million to Inner City Rec Leagues and LL in order to promote more blacks to try baseball. The owners and others say that by investing in them, you get a larger pool of talent and young fans follow the sport and buy merchandise. I don’t get the push back. Everyone in the WNBA is earning more money because of her. It is like what Tiger Woods did for TV advertising. He may have been overexposed to some fans, but the golfers all made more money.

No deserts other than she makes a killer cherry cream pie.All my cooking deals with Cajun dishes I learned at tailgating. LOL

  2. Even though it is for the future (and may not even happen), I am happy for football news. I go on Twitter these days and search for McNeese and all anyone is talking about is basketball. It doesn’t help that we stunk at football last season, and it’s even worse now that basketball school SFA is coming back. I don’t want to be a basketball school — at least not until about 5 months from now!

Coach Gilroy and staff and their athletes deserve this recognition. What an awesome job! As you pointed out recently, McNeese finished second in the Commissioner’s Cup race, and Schroyer says this is McNeese’s highest finish ever. Gilroy pointed out to me how many of the points earned by McNeese were from cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field. Super job!

73 days until the Cowboys kickoff against Tarleton State! Geaux Pokes!

  3. Ray’s fine comments reminded me to mention supporting MSU summer camps getting underway. My son at 6 did a basketball camp back when Ron Everhart was coach and enjoyed it and learned and gave my wife and I a break to do other things. He also slept well that week as any parent can relate to.This also supports the income of our fine assistant coaches. So,please sponsor, send participants or tell others about these camps.

    • Both the Cowboys and Cowgirls are having summer camps. I saw a few pictures on Twitter of the first summer camp the cowgirls held.

  4. I am not upset either about Caitlin Clark. She has the goods, the WNBA players know she has the goods, and most importantly she knows she has the goods. I’m reminded what ol’ Dizzy Dean always said, “It ain’t braggin’ if you can do it!” Caitlin is great for the sport, and I wish her well.

Oh! Let’s not forget Larry Bird. He and Magic lifted the NBA in a critical time. On a side note, he left Indiana University because he was overwhelmed, but the HC at Indiana State found him working on a garbage truck in French Lick, Ind. The rest is history!!
